Get Good at Getting Good
What separates great agents from average ones? It's not talent. It's not charisma. And it's definitely not luck.
More often than not, it's confidence…the confidence to walk into a listing presentation and lead the conversation, the confidence to challenge a vendor's price expectations, the confidence to ask better questions, the confidence to pick up the phone when others are procrastinating, and the confidence to negotiate firmly when emotions start rising.
But here's the thing. Confidence isn't something you're born with. It's something you build.
What confidence actually looks like
Many agents think confidence means being the loudest person in the room. That’s not it.
Real confidence is often much quieter than that. It's remaining calm when a buyer raises an objection. It's being comfortable with silence during a negotiation. It's telling a vendor what they need to hear, not what they want to hear. It's asking difficult questions because you know they'll lead to better outcomes.
Confident agents don't have all the answers. They simply trust their ability to find them. That's a big difference.
Confidence comes from competence
One of the biggest myths in real estate is that confidence comes first. In reality, confidence follows competence.
The more knowledgeable you become, the more confident you feel. The more conversations you have, the more comfortable you become. The more objections you handle, the less intimidating they seem.
The best agents aren't confident because they have some special personality trait. They're confident because they've done the work.
They've had hundreds of buyer conversations. They've sat through difficult vendor meetings. They've navigated challenging negotiations. They've seen it all before. That experience creates certainty, and certainty creates confidence.
How to build confidence faster
The good news is confidence can be developed by anyone willing to put in the work.
Start by becoming a student of your market. Know your listings. Know competing stock. Know what's selling, what's sitting and why. Preparation removes uncertainty.
Next, practise your conversations. Role-play listing presentations. Work through common objections. Refine your questions.
The agents who sound natural aren't winging it. They've simply practised enough that preparation becomes invisible.
Another powerful habit is reviewing your performance. After every listing presentation, negotiation or open home, ask yourself: What worked? What didn't? What would I do differently next time?
Small improvements made consistently create enormous confidence over time.
The confidence advantage
In a changing market, confidence becomes even more important. Buyers are looking for certainty. Vendors are looking for guidance. Both are looking for someone who can help them make decisions.
When an agent lacks confidence, people feel it. Conversations become reactive. Advice becomes inconsistent. Opportunities get missed.
But when an agent is prepared, knowledgeable and composed, people naturally trust them. And trust is often what wins the business. Not the cheapest fee. Not the flashiest marketing. Trust.
Get good at getting good
Every great agent started somewhere. None of them woke up one morning overflowing with confidence. They built it - through preparation, through repetition, through learning, through experience, and through a willingness to keep improving long after others stopped.
So, if you're looking for more confidence, don't chase confidence. Chase competence. Focus on getting a little better every day. Know your market better. Ask better questions. Practise more often. Learn from every interaction.
Because confidence isn't a personality trait. It's the result of preparation, repetition and competence.
Get good at getting good. The confidence will follow.
