If You Were Your Own Coach…
There is absolutely no doubt that there’s inherent value in engaging a coach to help you achieve your goals.
Whether it’s in business or your personal life, coaches are that all-important sounding board.
They’re the person who holds you accountable, while reviewing and suggesting strategies for improvement, and keeping you on track - all in the hope of improving and fast tracking your success.
It goes without saying that a coach can significantly amplify your results by tapping into their knowledge and experience.
However, I’d like to put this to you…
If your coach knew exactly what you’re thinking and how you’re really feeling, what advice would they offer?
If you made them aware of the precise fears and the specific things that are holding you back, what would they suggest?
What would they tell you if you let them in on the ‘comfort zones’ that you know you need to break free from?
Only you know what’s holding you back
As helpful as a coach may be, the reality is, only you really know exactly what’s holding you back.
And that means it’s highly probable that the best ‘coach’ available to you is with you every single day. It’s the one you face every morning in the mirror.
No one knows more of the ‘truths’ than what you do. And because of that, you are the person who can offer the best possible advice.
But you’ve got to dig deep
But here’s the thing…To be that ‘best coach’ for yourself, you have to dig deep. You have to be brutally honest with yourself, and bridge the gap between knowing what it is you need to do and actually doing those activities.
You need to clearly identify the things that are holding you back, including the blockages, counterproductive thinking, bad habits and negative behaviours that stand between you and where you want to be.
You need to be realistic about your fears, and the routines that allow you to stray from achieving your goals.
When we dig deep into the real reason of why we have difficulty bridging the gap between knowing and doing, only then can the solutions appear.
Be your first coach
Don’t get me wrong, external coaches are amazing. They can identify patterns that you may not be able to see and hold you accountable in a way that only someone else can.
However, it’s always a good idea to be ‘your first coach’.
When you are your ‘first coach’, you can ensure there is no ‘BS’ story that you’re selling yourself.
You can dig deep, be honest with yourself and gain incredible clarity into the habits, thinking and fears that stand between you and your ultimate aims.
Armed with this honest insight, you can then ask yourself the following: if your external coach had access to this information about your habits, thinking and fears, what advice would they give you?
Because that intersection unlocks a whole host of clarity about what it is exactly that you should be doing.
There’s no denying external coaches can help you change the playing field when it comes to your performance and the results you achieve. But if you’re looking to amplify the results you enjoy with this external coach, be your own coach first.
Identify and unlock the things that are holding you back, then tap into the strategy, insight and wisdom of an external coach to focus on shifting the needle in your favour.
