Is It Enough?
Ever considered the standard you hold yourself to? Are you an ‘all in’ kind of person, someone who goes ‘above and beyond’, or when you self-reflect would you more honestly see yourself as a ‘just enough’ person?
You know the type I mean – a ‘just enough’ person does just that, 'just enough’.
Just enough to get the job done.
Just enough to give the impression you've done the job.
Just enough to fulfil your minimum obligations.
Just enough to get a deal over the line.
Just enough to keep a customer happy.
Just enough to keep the boss happy.
Just enough prospecting.
Just enough to pay the bills and have a holiday.
Just enough exercise.
In other words, do you do your best or just enough to get by? Is 'just enough' your default mode?
An answer with consequences
Whether you consistently do your best or just enough to get by has profound consequences.
A 'just enough' mode prevents you from pushing or stretching yourself. You remain in the comfort state.
People who remain in the comfort state find themselves stuck in groundhog day and are unable to grow. Each day rolls into the next with little to no change.
It's a bit like that old report card at school that says you’re doing ok, but not really living up to your potential.
And it’s a cop out. If you don’t try too hard, you’re less likely to fail. And if you do fail, you don’t feel the pain of that failure quite so keenly. Why? Because you weren’t really trying. You did ‘just enough’.
Safe…sure, but it’s a long way from rewarding or exceptional.
Just enough is where average lives
Just as the comfort zone is a place of mediocrity, ‘just enough’ is the space where average lives.
When you’re delivering ‘just enough’ there’s nothing specifically wrong with your service and offering but it’s not remarkable.
It’s not memorable and it’s not the service or experience that results in raving fans who refer you to their family and friends.
It’s also a missed opportunity. The effort required to go above and beyond isn’t that much more than ‘just enough’. Often you’re doing the same tasks. All that’s required to elevate your effort is a little enthusiasm, personal investment, commitment and that small yet oh so significant final 10 per cent.
Enough already!
If you are seeking change, you must eliminate the 'just enough' mode. You need to go beyond. Beyond what is expected and more importantly, beyond what you expect of yourself.
You need to personally invest. Be brave and step beyond the comfort zone. Feel the fear that comes with putting yourself on the line and caring about the outcome.
Challenge yourself! Do you deserve ‘just enough’? Or do you owe it to yourself to be better?
So as you navigate through today's activities, ask the question: ‘Did I do 'just enough' or did I go beyond? Could I have done better?’
It's not about winning. It's about what you owe yourself, your clients and your career. It’s about looking yourself in the mirror and knowing you’re ‘all-in’, doing your very best at everything you tackle.
