It’s All About Balance
Think about the ideal life you hope to enjoy. Chances are you want to be healthy, find and create loving and meaningful relationships, be financially sound, love your work, take holidays and enjoy a happy ‘balanced’ life.
That is not some idle dream or aiming too high. Balance is important. Balance is special. But attaining that balance also requires something from you. Balance asks you to enjoy everything in moderation. Not too much, not too little.
It involves being proactive.
If we truly hope to find balance, we must make clear space for it, scheduling time into our daily calendar to tend to each part of the balance puzzle – time for family, time for work, time to look after our bodies and wellbeing while also navigating the demands of everyday life.
Important but not necessarily easy
There’s so much talk of work-life balance but rhetoric doesn’t necessarily make treading the balance tightrope any easier to achieve.
In fact, the search for ‘life balance’ in amongst all our modern-day pressures can sometimes feel elusive or unattainable.
We are influenced and easily distracted by the media and consumerism to keep doing more, to keep up with the Joneses, and to meet society’s expectations.
It’s very easy to lose our way. And finding a definition of a balanced life is difficult.
Why? Well, here’s the thing… life balance isn’t a one size fits all concept.
It’s personal and individual. Your version of balance might be different to mine and both our ideas on balance might be very different to that influencer you see on social media, or that ‘ultra successful’ personality who leads the field in their industry.
What’s your version of balance?
The secret is therefore to find and define your own personal version of balance. In other words, ask yourself what’s important to you? And more specifically, what’s important to you right now, at this stage of your life?
Because the reality is, ‘balance’ changes throughout our lifetime. It can alter in response to life events (both good and bad). It’s only natural that our priorities will shift and change over the course of our life, depending on age, relationships, health and more.
It’s also important to accept the fact that in order to achieve balance, there will be times when we need to work through ‘unbalanced’ periods.
On other words, there will be times when one area of life has priority over another, where our focus needs to be directed towards a specific piece of the life puzzle – whether that’s family, work, relationships, or health.
Balance requires effort
The reality is, balance doesn’t just happen. Like sitting on a see-saw and searching for that perfect point of equilibrium, balance requires effort. It takes discipline, persistence and the occasional tweak. You cannot leave it to chance.
The search for balance and the desire to live a balanced lifestyle is meaningful. It’s easy to forget that life takes a lot in return for all the good things it gives us.
Finding and searching for balance is a choice, and today is a perfect opportunity to reflect on the balance and imbalances that you may wish to work on.
