Playing to Win

October 18, 2024•3 min read

No one plays to come second. We all play to win. We want the recognition of being the best. We want the satisfaction of performing at our optimum and the reward of a job well done.

But simply wanting that victory isn’t enough.

If you’re seriously playing to edge out the competition and achieve your personal goals, you need resilience, strategy, patience and an all-encompassing commitment to achieving the aim.

Winning takes strategy

Playing to win requires strategy. It’s not luck. It’s not by chance. It’s deliberate.

Those who win, often win by the minutest of margins. The victory is in the little things, done with the greatest of skill.

It’s the extra one per cent multiplied by 100 that adds up to 100 per cent. It’s the attention to detail. The follow-up and the follow through.

And often these things aren’t complex. They’re the tiny details like reaching out to people regularly, delivering what you promise, and calling when you say you will.

Winning needs patience

The results we achieve today don’t just magically happen. They’re due to the work we did yesterday and the week before.

Playing to win requires patience. It’s about having a mindset of delayed gratification. No one becomes an overnight success in real estate. You have to put the work in, create good habits, embrace discipline and allow time to do its thing.

Winning requires resilience

Winning requires resilience. To succeed we must have the ability to take those inevitable knocks in our stride.

The reality is, anything worth achieving requires us to step outside our comfort zone and push some personal boundaries. And there will be times when the learning curve is steep.

There will also be occasions when things don’t pan out as we hope.

We know we are going to get hit and knocked to the ground. It’s not an ‘if,’ but a ‘when’. Knowing that, anticipating that and accepting that is strategic. Understanding that setbacks are integral to the journey is how you keep getting back up.

Winning demands learning

To win now and well into the future, we need to be sharpening the saw. Success and ultimate victory requires a formal and strategic approach that embraces perpetual learning and encourages us to continually refine our processes.

We must constantly be asking ourselves, is there a better way? Is there a tool that’s missing from our toolkit? Is there a practice that needs perfecting?

And as we move through this career and bring people in to work alongside us, that mindset extends to our team. We need to give them the tools and skills they need to succeed. We must train our team to win.

Playing to win is a choice

Each of us has the potential to win, but playing to win is a choice.

It will require commitment and dedication. It will take strategy, patience, resilience and an embrace of ongoing learning.

Playing to win is all encompassing. And we don’t make that choice just once. We make it each moment in the activities we choose to do, those we cast by the wayside and the types of habits we decide to embrace.

It begs the question, are you playing to win or just idly dreaming of victory? Because if winning is really your goal, chances are you know exactly what you need to do.
