The Follow-up Most Agents Never Make
One of the biggest differences between average and exceptional agents is not always skill, market knowledge or even experience. Often, it comes down to something much simpler.
They follow up.
Throughout my career in real estate, I have seen countless opportunities lost because an agent gave up too early. A conversation happened, an inquiry came in, a potential client showed interest, but somewhere along the way, the follow-up stopped, and the agent moved on to the next opportunity.
The challenge is that real estate decisions rarely happen on the first conversation.
People need time. They need information. They need confidence. They need to feel that they are making the right decision.
Sometimes success is sitting on the other side of one more call, one more message or one more genuine check-in.
The conversation that didn’t convert… yet
Many agents look at a conversation that didn’t immediately result in a listing or sale and assume it was a missed opportunity. But timing matters.
A homeowner who requests an appraisal today may not be ready to sell for six months. A buyer who attends an open home may not find the right property straight away. A past client may be thinking about making a move but has not yet reached the point where they are ready to act.
That doesn’t mean the opportunity has disappeared. It just means the relationship needs nurturing.
Imagine an agent meeting with a homeowner who says, “We are thinking about selling, but probably not until next year”.
Many agents will thank them for their time and move on.
A great agent creates a plan. They stay connected, they send relevant market updates, they check in every few months, and they continue to provide value.
When that homeowner finally decides the time is right, who do you think they are most likely to call?
The agent who disappeared, or the agent who stayed connected?
Follow-up is about value, not pressure
One of the reasons some agents avoid follow-up is because they worry about becoming a nuisance.
But effective follow-up is not about repeatedly asking, “Are you ready to list?” It’s about staying relevant.
It might be sharing a recent sale in the area and explaining what it means for the market. It might be checking in after a buyer misses out on a property. It might be sending useful information that helps someone make a more informed decision.
The best agents understand that every interaction is an opportunity to build trust. People remember the agent who helped them, not just the agent who wanted something from them.
Small actions create big results
The agents who consistently achieve great results are often not doing something dramatically different. They are simply more disciplined with the fundamentals.
They make the call they said they would make.
They send the message they promised to send.
They reconnect with people who have gone quiet.
They understand that a database full of contacts has little value without meaningful conversations.
One extra follow-up each day might not feel significant in the moment. But over a year, those conversations compound.
One extra conversation can become one extra relationship. One extra relationship can become one extra opportunity. And one extra opportunity can change the trajectory of a business.
Consistency wins in every market
In a fast-moving market, follow-up can be the difference between winning and losing opportunities. In a slower market, it becomes even more important.
When competition increases and sellers become more selective, the agents who have built genuine relationships are the ones who stand out.
Real estate success is rarely created by one big moment. It is created through hundreds of small actions repeated consistently.
The perfect time to reconnect with someone is rarely when you need something from them. It is before that moment.
Make the call. Send the message. Check in one more time. Because often, the opportunity you are looking for is already there. You just need to follow up.
