The Little Things

May 01, 20263 min read

In real estate, and in business generally, people often chase the big moments - the major listing presentation, the auction day result, the record sale, the breakthrough year.

But the truth is, those moments rarely happen because of something dramatic. They happen because of hundreds of small things done properly.

Big results can always be traced back to little things, because when you take care of the little things, big things become automatic.

Standards are a choice

When I prepare a PowerPoint presentation, I care about the fonts, the spacing, the flow, the visual impact.

But that hasn’t always been the case. Years ago, my presentations weren’t particularly polished. They did the job, but they were far from refined.

Today, they’re significantly better. These days, I’m all about the detail - every margin, every alignment, every visual balance matters.

Why? Because detail makes an impact.

You might think a client doesn’t consciously notice those things. And you might be right. But they feel it.

Professionalism has a texture to it. It shows up in the way something looks, reads, and flows, and that feeling influences trust.

Excellence is built in the small moments

It’s the same with our training materials and content.

I could write them quickly and still land the core message. In many cases, the idea would still be strong enough. But often I’ll spend far longer shaping them than people would expect.

Refining the phrasing, improving the structure, removing a word here adding a line there.

Is that always efficient? Probably not. But it’s aligned with my values.

I never want to default to the mindset that “good enough is good enough”. Because it isn’t.

Your standards shape your identity

The standards you apply to the small things eventually become your professional identity.

Little things like:

  • How your emails read.

  • How your marketing materials look.

  • How prepared you are for a listing presentation.

  • How quickly you return a call.

  • How clearly you communicate with vendors.

These details might seem minor in isolation. But collectively they form the experience people have when they work with you. And that experience is your brand.

Not the logo. Not the colours. The experience.

When people consistently encounter professionalism, preparation, and care, something important happens. Trust grows.

Trust is built quietly

Trust isn’t usually built in one big moment. It’s built quietly.

It’s created in small actions such as a well-prepared meeting, a thoughtful follow-up message, a listing presentation that feels structured and considered, and a vendor report that’s clear and insightful.

None of those things are extraordinary on their own, but together they create confidence.

And confident clients make decisions faster, refer more often, and stay loyal longer.

Raise the standard for yourself

So it’s worth asking a simple question: What standards are you applying to the small things in your business?

Look at your own processes:

  • Your admin systems.

  • Your listing preparation.

  • Your buyer follow-up.

  • Your vendor communication.

  • Your marketing.

  • Are they deliberate? Or are they just “good enough”?

The most successful agents I’ve worked with over the years tend to share one thing in common. They care about the details. Not for recognition, but because it reflects who they are.

Raise the standard for you first. Your clients will feel it. Your team will feel it. And eventually, your business will reflect it.

Because when the little things are done properly, the big results don’t need to be forced. They become automatic.
