The Thing That Sets You Free

August 22, 2025•3 min read

Think back to what drew you to real estate as a career. Chances are at least part of the allure was freedom.

Freedom to work for yourself, earn an uncapped income and enjoy the rewards that come with financial success.

Freedom to set your own benchmarks, take time off when you needed to, and build something for yourself and your family.

Yes, freedom is a major drawcard of this career, but here’s an interesting thing…achieving that freedom often comes down to activities that are the polar opposite of doing whatever you please, whenever you feel like it.

In this industry, it’s the rigour of routine that sets you free, and it’s the race against the clock that keeps you moving.

And nailing that routine, to ensure it’s well structured, productive and effective, is critical.

The beauty of routine

Routine isn’t glamorous, but it sure is effective when it comes to building non-negotiable high-value activities into your day.

Things like action lists, calendar appointments, calendar block out times and scheduled tasks, morning rituals, me time, work start times, and end of day wind downs.

Routine works because it takes the internal dialogue out of the equation. You’re not floundering around weighing up what to do next. Without even thinking, you move from one task to another at an allocated time.

Routine gives you structure. It provides deadlines as well as process and procedure. It allows you to be consistent and build on your results. Ideally, this routine also gives you work/life balance.

It tells you when you are on the clock and working, and when to wind down and do the personal things you need to do, including exercise, relaxation, and family time.

Importantly, routine lets you enjoy those moments when you’re off the clock. Because you have an established routine for when work activities need to be achieved, you don’t spend your downtime rethinking them and worrying about when and how you’ll get the job done.

Carving out an ideal routine

Creating a routine that works for you is a personal thing. You can’t just take someone else’s schedule and apply it to your day.

But you can borrow key ingredients in the knowledge. An effective week is made up of effective work days, and effective work days are split between AM and PM priorities.

As the saying goes, when you own the morning, you own the day. That means mornings should be about opportunity creation. Your AM routine should be focused on outbound calls, high-priority negotiations, deal making, price alignments and offer extraction.

Afternoons are ideal for in-person appointments and face-to-face meetings. Your PM routine should focus on activities such as buyer inspections, appraisals, vendor meetings and offer presentations.

Make it work for you

Work the AM/PM system and make it work for you. Create the blueprint that will continually elevate your career and life.

And if it’s not working, you need to revise and tweak your routine until it does. Pull it apart, piece it back together. Whatever works for you, that’s your work groove.

Working in your work groove is a game changer - both mentally and on a productivity level. Find your groove, work your groove and do great work.
