What a Difference a Day Makes…
What a difference a day makes…24 little hours
Those song lyrics might date back to the 1930s, but the reality is they offer a timeless truth that extends to real estate.
A lot can happen in a day, and 24 hours can be the catalyst for a major breakthrough in both the short and long term.
In just one day, we can do work that triggers a listing or begins the relationship that wins the business in 12 months, two years, or five years down the track.
But first, we need to focus on the tasks that actually move the needle…
Things that move the needle
If we’re looking to create future impact, our job today is to focus on high-value work. These are the one, two or three things that will move the needle the most.
You know what these activities are; they are the tasks that yield the best results for you personally.
If it’s not a high-value activity, delegate it, eliminate it, or move it further down your to-do list.
Why? Because everything beyond those high-value activities is a distraction. Distractions lead to inactivity, and inactivity creates ‘Groundhog Day’.
The longer you are stuck in ‘Groundhog Day’ doing the same ineffective activities with no result, the harder it is to break the cycle.
It creates negative momentum, which left unattended, can be crippling.
Don’t wait for perfection
Don’t lose sight of the fact that done is better than perfect. To get the most out of each day, do not wait for perfection. Waiting for everything to be ‘just so’ only leads to procrastination and excuses.
Set a deadline and get the job done with the knowledge that ‘done’ does not mean settling for ‘bad’ or ‘mediocre’.
Instead, it shifts the focus to finishing tasks rather than getting stuck in an endless, energy-sapping loop of refinement.
Set the expectation
Markets might shift and slow, but that doesn’t mean they stop. And in the times when listings are harder to come by and properties take more time to sell, you need to work smarter, more effectively, and more strategically.
You need to know the metrics that will get you the results you need, including the number of prospecting calls you need to make and how they convert to appraisals, listings and sales.
If you’re working in a team, make sure you have clearly defined roles and daily action lists. Set the expectations. Hold each other accountable.
24 little hours
Make no mistake, a day can change everything. In just 24 hours, you can start a new habit, embrace a new routine, define and focus on your needle-moving activities, and take the first critical steps to the outcomes that you want.
But you cannot just ‘hope’ it will happen or wait for it to fall into place. Leaving it to chance is not an option. It never has been, and it never will be. No matter what the market does, you need to be effective, strategic and smart.
You need to be crystal clear on what you’re hoping to achieve and laser-focused on the needle-moving activities that will get you there.
End the day with a list of these activities, and start the next day with that list.
Your greatest competitive advantage is a reflection of how you plan to choose to work and how disciplined you are in sticking to that plan.
